Shabu Sale Worth P100 Gets Mother Life in Prison

Laila Delgante Remegio, 42, from Purok Mahigugmaon, Brgy. 22 was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt for selling shabu. She was sentenced to life in prison last May 28 at the Bacolod Regional Trial Court by Judge Therese Blanche Bolunia. The said act is a violation of the 2002 Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act or RA 9165. Furthermore, she is also set to pay a fine amounting to half a million pesos. There was also a separate illegal possession of drugs case filed against her but it was dismissed on the grounds of reasonable doubt.

Remegio was apprehended last Feb. 2, 2005 at her place in Purok Mahigugmaon after she sold P100 worth of shabu (.02 grams) to a police poseur-buyer. Police were also able to find six plastic sachets of the said drug in her home.

Police testimony accompanied by tons of supporting documents and evidence collected was able to convince the court that the sale of illegal drugs indeed took place. Included in the supporting documents are the police blotter, marked buy-bust money, chemistry report and certification. The court stated that the evidence provided by the prosecution against Remegio were properly reserved.

Remegio vehemently denied the allegations against her and also used an alibi. For the court’s part, they were not swayed as denial is typically a weak form of defense and becomes especially weaker when not accompanied by clear, convincing evidence.

However, it is only approved for use when the benefits outweigh the risks.
