NLEX flooding solutions discussed by DPWH and private sector

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is actively pursuing NLEX flooding solutions with the private sector. Secretary Vince Dizon and NLEX officials conducted a joint inspection on Thursday. They focused on the Balong Bato Creek area in EDSA-Balintawak. This specific section experiences recurring flooding during heavy rain. The floodwaters often stall traffic on the North Luzon Expressway. Engineers and planners joined the high-level meeting at the site.

Inspection of Balong Bato Creek

The team walked along the creek to identify major blockages. They observed how water moves through the local drainage system. Silt and trash currently reduce the total capacity of the creek. This leads to frequent overflow during the monsoon season. Engineers took precise measurements of the existing culverts. They want to understand why the current system fails. Public and private experts shared their initial findings during the walk. The inspection lasted for several hours on Thursday morning.

Implementing NLEX Flooding Solutions

The DPWH and NLEX management are planning structural changes. They discussed several NLEX flooding solutions during the site visit. One plan involves dredging the entire Balong Bato Creek. Removing deep sediment will allow more water to flow freely. The group also considered upgrading the nearby pumping stations. New pumps could move water away from the road much faster. This cooperation aims to protect the safety of the motoring public. Private partners will assist with the funding of these improvements.

Coordination with Local Authorities

Government officials will meet with Quezon City leaders very soon. They need to address the trash problem in the local waterways. Clogged drains are a major cause of the recurring flooding. The private sector will provide technical expertise for this project. A clear timeline for the upgrades will be set shortly. Contractors must complete the work before the next rainy season. Clearer drainage will ensure faster travel times for all commuters. Successful coordination is vital for the project’s long-term success.

Impact on Regional Travel

NLEX serves thousands of vehicles every single day. Flooding at the Balintawak interchange causes massive traffic gridlock. These delays impact the delivery of essential goods and services. Solving this issue remains a top priority for the DPWH. The department wants to ensure the expressway stays safe and dry. Private partners committed to supporting the necessary engineering repairs. Motorists have complained about the water levels for many years. The government hears these concerns and is taking direct action. Reliable infrastructure is necessary for the growth of the national economy. Permanent engineering works will follow these initial site tests.
