The Philippines and China summoned each other’s ambassadors following a recent Ayungin Shoal clash in disputed waters. Both nations traded accusations over the maritime incident. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. strongly condemned the actions of the Chinese Coast Guard on Monday. He called the maneuvers dangerous and illegal. The Department of Foreign Affairs summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian to file a formal protest. Philippine officials expressed deep concern over the confrontation.

President Marcos Condemns Dangerous Maneuvers

President Marcos stated that the Philippines will not be intimidated by these actions. He addressed the nation after a high-level security meeting. The President emphasized the need to protect Philippine sovereign rights. The Philippine Coast Guard reported that Chinese vessels harassed their supply boats. These boats were delivering food and water to soldiers stationed at the shoal. Soldiers live on the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded ship in the area. The President praised the courage of the Filipino crew members.

China Responds to Ayungin Shoal Clash

China also took swift diplomatic action against the Philippines. The Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned the Philippine envoy in Beijing. Chinese officials filed a solemn representation regarding the Ayungin Shoal clash. They claimed that Philippine vessels intruded into Chinese territory without permission. China asserts sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. They accused Manila of violating international law. Beijing urged the Philippines to stop its “provocations” at sea immediately. They warned of further consequences if the missions continue.

Escalation in the West Philippine Sea

The incident involved a physical collision between a Philippine supply boat and a Chinese ship. The Chinese Coast Guard also used water cannons against the Philippine vessels. This maneuver caused minor damage to the wooden supply boats. Fortunately, no crew members suffered injuries during the encounter. The Philippine government released videos of the incident to the public. These videos show the Chinese ships blocking the path of the Philippine boats. The international community has expressed concern over the rising tensions.

Regional Stability Under Threat

Tensions between Manila and Beijing continue to reach new highs. This event marks a significant escalation in the ongoing maritime dispute. Both countries maintain firm claims over the shoal. The United States and other allies have voiced support for the Philippines. They called for China to respect the 2016 arbitral ruling. That ruling invalidated China’s expansive claims in the region. Beijing continues to ignore the international court’s decision. Diplomatic talks remain the primary tool to prevent further conflict.
